AI has made scams harder to spot. Phishing emails now arrive with perfect grammar, and a cloned voice can sound exactly like someone you love. Video calls can be faked.
Fraud losses in Canada show it. In just the first half of 2026, the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre (CAFC) has registered $351 million in reported losses. The real number is higher: these losses represent only a fraction of the harm, because only 5% to 10% of frauds are reported.
“Cybersecurity is about people, not technology. Cybercrime is an attack on our state of mind, so we are the human firewall.”
Kathy Macdonald, M.O.M., MSc., CPP, is a retired Calgary Police Service officer and cybercrime prevention specialist with nearly three decades of investigative and security experience. Drawing on firsthand experience with the evolution of online fraud—from early internet scams to today’s AI-enabled deception—she helps audiences recognize, prevent and respond to digital threats.
She has been acknowledged in international cybercrime publications from the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and even NATO to “inform cyber defense policy for the foreseeable future.” The Governor General of Canada appointed her a Member of the Order of Merit of the Police Forces for her commitment to cybercrime prevention.
