Most Canadians first meet wealth management through a bank. The country’s largest institutions offer it all under one roof: everyday banking, lending, a mortgage, and an investment account. For many, the appeal of convenience is enough.
Bellwether is built differently on purpose. We are an independent, national wealth management firm, founded in 2009 to serve affluent families across Canada. We are not owned by a bank, and that independence shapes how we advise.
Our services don’t include private banking, lending, or credit, but what you gain in return is objective advice focused entirely on your goals. We operate under a true fiduciary standard, which legally binds us to act in your best interest. There is no in-house product shelf to fill, no commission pressure, and no incentive to recommend anything but what is right for you.
You also gain focus. Instead of treating you like a number, your advisor has the time to truly understand what makes you, your family, and your business unique. Supported by a group of dedicated experts that coordinate your investments, planning, tax, and estate work together, our team-based approach delivers the depth of an institutional firm with boutique-level attention to detail.
For families weighing a bank against an independent firm, ask whose interests your advice is built around. At Bellwether, the answer is only ever yours.
Bob Sewell: My name is Bob Sewell. I founded Bellwether in 2009. Our vision for Bellwether is really to create a national independent wealth management platform that serves the distinct needs of affluent families in their local communities. Really wanted to be seen as the alternative to the banks in Canada.
Steve Meehan: Wouldn’t it be great if you could build a model where it takes the best of both worlds, where it takes the best of what an advisor provides to his client and pair it up with what an investment council firm provides in terms of investment management?
Alan Cameron: We all know that firms can get too big to be responsive, but we needed a firm that was big enough to deliver the kind of service we need for our clients, and yet small enough to listen and to adapt to changing and competitive times.
Chris Jardine: Bellwether is a very client-driven firm. It gives me a lot of time to focus on what is most important, which is ultimately the clients, focus on the planning for them. With the additional time that I have, it allows me to spend a lot more time talking to my clients, and I’ve had really positive feedback.
Bob Sewell: I think if you start by focusing on the client experience, then having a consistent process is really very critical. The fact is that the best investment and wealth management organizations globally follow an investment process that’s consistent and replicable over time for exactly that reason, the client experience.
Alan Cameron: Plenty of interaction, plenty of abilities for us to make sure that the portfolios reflect our clients’ goals and concerns. But we’re no longer trying to wear two hats unsuccessfully. We’re focused on our clients, and we have a perfectly interactive, I would argue, far more interactive approach in dealing with building portfolios than we ever had before.
No, and that’s by design. Bellwether is an independent wealth management firm rather than a bank, so it doesn’t provide everyday banking, lending, or credit. Its role is holistic financial planning and investment management—advice that isn’t tied to any banking product.
Operating under a fiduciary standard means Bellwether is legally bound to act in your best interest at all times—no commissions, no pressure to sell proprietary products, and no hidden revenue. It is still a rare commitment in Canada, and it is the foundation of independent advice that consistently puts your interests first.
The LCGE shelters up to $1.25 million (indexed; as of 2026) in capital gains on qualifying small business corporation shares from tax on sale. Shares must meet specific 24-month ownership and active-business asset tests to qualify. Proper structuring—often several years before the transaction—is typically required to protect eligibility by the time the sale closes.
If having your banking, credit, and investments bundled under one roof matters most, a bank-owned platform may suit you better—and we’ll be the first to tell you. Clients choose Bellwether when they want independent, planning-led advice that isn’t attached to selling banking products.
