Art brings over 45 years of experience in investment management to Bellwether, with the majority of his career being devoted to Estate and Trust and High Net Worth clients. Prior to joining Bellwether in January 2010, Art was most recently a Managing Director of TD Asset Management as well as Chief Investment Officer (CIO) for TD Canada Trust’s Private Trust division.
Art started his career with a “sell side” investment dealer but after a short time, he moved to the “buy side” when he joined Guaranty Trust which later became Central Guaranty Trust (CGT) in 1987. During his time with CGT, Art held a number of progressively more senior positions including Assistant Treasurer; Chief Investment Officer; Senior Manager, Equity Investments; and Vice President, Equity Investments. In 1993, TD Bank acquired the assets of CGT and Art has spent the balance of his career with the TD Bank.
During the 1980s, Art’s responsibilities with the trust company included assisting in the management of the corporate balance sheet, retail mutual fund management, managing corporate pension fund accounts as well as managing High Net Worth estate, trust and agency accounts. Art developed and managed a family of common trust funds used exclusively by the trust company’s estate & trust clients that at their peak exceeded $1 billion.
Since joining TD Bank in 1993, Art’s investment management responsibilities expanded to also include developing and being the lead manager for three distinct equity investment models known as Blue Chip, Dividend and US Large Cap. Under Art’s management the assets under management (AUM) for the three models grew to over $2.8 billion. All three models experienced positive returns and regularly exceeded their respective benchmarks. The models and their strategies continue to be widely used by TD Waterhouse Private Investment Counsel Inc. Art’s CIO responsibilities with the trust company included establishing and maintaining investment guidelines/asset mixes for Private Trust clients plus having direct responsibility for the management of all North American equity common trust funds. While there can be no guarantees in terms of future performance, during the period 1982 from its inception until 2008 the Canadian CTF equity fund managed by Art did generate “annual” compounded returns in excess of 15%.
Art graduated in Business Administration degree from Ryerson Polytechnic University and has completed several industry-related courses including the Canadian Investment Manager (CIM) designation and Manager, Trust Investments (MTI) from the Canadian Securities Institute and Trust Companies Association.
